House Call, 24-Hour Clinic, or A&E: Which One Do You Actually Need?

The short answer. Go to A&E for anything that could be life-threatening. Use a 24-hour clinic when the patient can travel and the problem is straightforward. Book a house call when the patient is hard to move, or moving them makes things worse, and the situation is not an emergency.

It is 11pm, someone at home is unwell, and the question is what to do about it. Getting this wrong in one direction wastes a night in a waiting room. Getting it wrong in the other direction is dangerous. Here is how to tell them apart.

For service details, see book a house call doctor.

Go to A&E now

A 24-hour clinic is usually the right call when

  • The patient can get into a car without much difficulty
  • The problem is straightforward and likely needs a quick look and a prescription
  • Something is needed that lives in a clinic, such as an X-ray, blood tests, or stitches
  • Cost is the deciding factor

A house call is usually the right call when

  • The patient is elderly, frail, or difficult to move safely
  • Someone is recovering from surgery or illness and travel would set them back
  • A young child is unwell and a waiting room full of other sick people is the last place you want them
  • The patient is contagious and you would rather not take that into a shared space
  • There is no one available to drive, or getting everyone out of the house is not realistic
  • It is late, clinics nearby are shut, and it is not an emergency

The three side by side

House call 24-hour clinic A&E
Best for Patient hard to move, non-emergency Patient can travel, straightforward problem Anything possibly life-threatening
You travel No Yes Yes
Waiting None once booked Usually some Can be long if the case is not urgent
On-site testing Limited to what the doctor brings Basic tests available Full hospital facilities
Typical cost From RM250 with DocSquad Lower Varies, higher at private hospitals

What about elderly parents?

This is one of the most common reasons people book a house call, and it is often the adult child arranging it rather than the patient.

Moving an elderly parent to a clinic at night is not a small thing. There is getting them dressed, into a car, through a car park, into a waiting room, and home again. For someone unsteady on their feet or confused in unfamiliar surroundings, the journey can be harder on them than the illness. A home visit removes all of that, and the doctor also gets to see the actual living situation, which sometimes explains more than the symptoms do.

What about children?

For a child who is unwell but stable, a home visit avoids a waiting room full of other infections and keeps them somewhere familiar. For a baby under three months with a fever, or any child who is struggling to breathe, unusually floppy, or not responding normally, go to a hospital rather than waiting for a home visit.

If you are not sure

Describe what is happening when you make contact rather than just asking for a visit. A provider worth using will tell you if a hospital is the better option, even though that means turning the booking away.

Frequently asked questions

Should I call a house call doctor or go to A&E? Go to A&E for chest pain, breathing difficulty, severe bleeding, suspected stroke, seizures, serious injury, or an unresponsive patient. A house call is for situations that need a doctor but are not emergencies.

Is a house call doctor cheaper than A&E? Usually, but cost should not be the deciding factor in an emergency. If it might be life-threatening, go to hospital.

Can a house call doctor do blood tests or X-rays? A home visit is limited to what the doctor can bring. Anything needing imaging or a laboratory is better handled at a clinic or hospital.

Is a house call worth it for an elderly parent? Often yes. The journey to a clinic can be harder on a frail patient than the illness, and a home visit avoids it entirely.

What if the doctor thinks we need a hospital? They will tell you and advise on what to do next.
