The short answer. Home physiotherapy is a one-hour session with a registered physiotherapist in your own home, built around getting you moving safely in the space you actually live in. In KL, Selangor and Putrajaya, DocSquad charges RM250 a session, RM1,100 for five or RM2,000 for ten. You need a doctor's referral first, and some rehabilitation genuinely does better in a clinic, which we'll explain below.
After a stroke, a hip replacement, or a long hospital stay, getting to physiotherapy is often the hardest part of physiotherapy. The car, the stairs, the waiting room, the drive home, sometimes three times a week. For many families that's the point where sessions start getting skipped.
Home physiotherapy removes the journey. This guide covers what a session involves, who it suits, who it doesn't, and what it costs.
Who home physiotherapy is for
Our physiotherapists see patients at home for:
- Recovery after a stroke
- Recovery after surgery, including knee and hip replacement, ACL repair and spinal surgery
- Back and neck pain, including slipped disc and sciatica
- Elderly mobility, balance and fall prevention
- Frozen shoulder
- Arthritis
- Neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis
- Sports injuries, sprains and ligament injuries
The common thread is someone for whom travelling to a clinic is difficult, tiring, or getting in the way of turning up at all.
What happens in a session
Before the first visit. You'll need a doctor's referral. If you don't have one yet, tell us when you get in touch and we'll guide you through getting it.
The first session. The physiotherapist does a detailed assessment: your condition, your medical history, how you're moving now, and what you want to be able to do again. That becomes a treatment plan.
Every session after that. One hour of hands-on treatment, which may include manual therapy, guided exercises and stretching, depending on your plan. You're also given a home exercise programme to follow between visits.
Equipment. The physiotherapist brings what the session needs, such as resistance bands, therapy balls and a TENS unit. You don't need to buy anything beforehand.
Why home can work better than you'd expect
The obvious benefit is no travel. The less obvious one is that the physiotherapist works in your real environment.
Your own stairs, your own bathroom, the height of your own bed, the step at your front door. For someone relearning to walk after a stroke or a hip replacement, practising on the exact obstacles they face every day is directly useful, in a way that a clinic's practice steps are not.
Family members can also watch and learn how to help safely between sessions, which is hard to arrange in a busy clinic.
When a clinic or hospital is the better choice
Home physiotherapy is not the right answer for everyone, and a good provider should tell you that.
- Rehabilitation that needs large equipment, such as a treadmill, parallel bars, hydrotherapy or specialised machines, is better done at a clinic or rehabilitation centre.
- Early recovery immediately after a major event is usually managed by the hospital team first. They will advise when home physiotherapy can take over.
- Any new or sudden symptom, such as new weakness, chest pain or a fall with injury, needs a doctor, not a physiotherapy session.
Home vs outpatient clinic
| Home physiotherapy | Outpatient clinic | |
|---|---|---|
| Travel | None | Every session |
| Session length | 1 hour, one to one | Varies |
| Environment | Your own home, stairs and bathroom | Clinic setting |
| Equipment | Portable: bands, balls, TENS | Full range, including large machines |
| Family involvement | Easy to include | Harder to arrange |
| Best for | Patients for whom travel is a barrier | Rehab needing large equipment |
What it costs
All sessions are one hour with a MAHPC-registered physiotherapist, at your home.
| Package | Price | Per session |
|---|---|---|
| Single session | RM250 | RM250 |
| 5 sessions | RM1,100 | RM220 |
| 10 sessions | RM2,000 | RM200 |
The number of sessions you need depends on your assessment. The first session tells you and your physiotherapist what's realistic.
Checking your physiotherapist is registered
Every physiotherapist practising in Malaysia must hold a valid Annual Practising Certificate from the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council (MAHPC), under the Allied Health Professions Act 2016. All DocSquad physiotherapists hold one. Ask any provider for their physiotherapist's registration before the first visit.
If physiotherapy is part of a bigger recovery
After a stroke or surgery, physiotherapy is often one piece of the picture. DocSquad can coordinate it alongside doctor visits, home nursing and wound care, so the same team knows what's happening across all of them. If you're not sure whether you need a nurse, a caregiver or a physiotherapist, our guide to the difference between a home nurse, caregiver and physiotherapist walks through it.
